Performs maintenance on steam locomotives and nonelectric sections of diesel-electric locomotives.

Must be able to supervise personnel performing duties of MOS 65B, 65D, 65G, 65H, 65J or 65K at the 4 skill level; serves as principal NCO in railway operating, maintenance-of-way or repair company, or operations section of railway battalion or higher level organization; advises on all matters relating to railway operations, maintenance-of-way, and repair; monitors and controls railway, passenger, and freight traffic; prepares, reproduces, and distributes operation reports; edits and prepares training material; assists in coordination and implementation of operations, training programs, and administrative activities; maintains records of strength, location and employment of railway personnel, and equipment; coordinates railway operations and maintenance; consolidates, prepares, reviews, and processes regular and special reports of command railway activities; performs principal noncommissioned officer duties associated with SQI M; provides advice and makes, recommendations to the commander aid staff on all matters pertain to enlisted personnel and their families; accompanies the commander on inspections and visits and at ceremonies; assists in inspection of command activities facilities aid personnel as prescribed by the commander; holds First Sergeants' or Sergeants' Major call to announce information and instructions; insures that newly assigned enlisted personnel are instructed in military courtesy, customs, of the service, and command regulations or policies; provides counsel and guidance to NCOs and other enlisted personnel of the command; inspects duties performed by subordinate NCOs; notes discrepancies and initiates appropriate corrective action; assists in reception of visitors to the command; sits as president or, member of command promotion board for NCOs, as authorized by regulations; performs other duties prescribed by, the commander.

Performs organizational, direct and general support maintenance on steam locomotives and nonelectric sections of diesel-electric locomotives; inspects locomotive to diagnose malfunctions; examines fuel, oil and water lines and pressure gages for leaks, breaks and proper connections; starts engines and examines and listens to movement of major assemblies for proper operation; tests cylinder compression; dismantles, inspects, overhauls and repairs broken, worn or malfunctioning parts; measures machined parts, pistons and crankshaft with micrometers to determine amount of wear; grinds and reseats worn valves; replaces worn pistons, bearings and gears, and examines axles and bearings; accompanies locomotive operator on test runs and observes functions of locomotives; replaces defective fan belts, manifold gaskets, fuel injectors and fuel filters; inspects frame and running gear for breaks, cracks, or worn surfaces; cleans and lubricates components as required; employs shop machines such as electric drills, lathes, air-powered hand tools and hydraulic jacks; applies and reads micrometers, feeder gages, steel scales and tongue indicators; performs all brickwork in firebox and inspects, renews and makes repairs to fire grates, grates baking mechanism and ash man assemblies; cuts out defective pipes and tubes and installs replacements; subjects boilers and tanks to hydrostatic test; performs welding, riveting and calking; performs technical inspections on locomotives and auxiliary equipment to ensure proper maintenance has been performed; interprets technical blueprints and sketches; performs organizational, direct and general support maintenance on steam locomotives and nonelectric sections of diesel-electric locomotives; performs duties shown in preceding level of skill and provides technical guidance to lower grade personnel in accomplishment of these duties; performs technical inspection and supervises medium size activity involved in organizational, direct and general support maintenance on steam locomotives and nonelectric sections of diesel-electric locomotives; performs initial and final inspection of locomotives scheduled for maintenance; supervises; and instructs repairmen in methods and techniques of repairs to mechanical components of diesel-electric locomotives, and to boiler and running gear of steam locomotive; enforces safety practices; prepares technical reports on locomotives and estimates personnel, supplies, parts, and equipment necessary to restore locomotives, tanks, and tank cars to efficient operating condition; plans, organizes and coordinates work activities of subordinates engaged in maintaining, inspecting and repairing locomotives and auxiliary equipment; establishes suspense dates and priorities in work accomplishment; reviews, consolidates and prepares technical, personnel and administrative reports covering unit activities.
