Job Detail

Supervises and splices all types of communication cables.

Must be able to perform duties of Lineman 36C40; serves as operations sergeant in a battalion, comparable, or higher headquarters engaged in wire and cable construction or rehabilitation; interprets telephone distribution system engineering and planning techniques; appraises wire and cable installation operations; prepares technical and administrative reports on cable construction and maintenance activities; supervises organization, training, and technical operation activities of unit; organizes unit defense; serves as First Sergeant of a company; interprets and supervises execution of company policy and Standard Operations Procedure; assists in planning, coordinating, and supervising all activities that support the company mission; advises company commander on all matters concerning enlisted personnel, to include assignments, reassignments, transfers, promotions, granting of passes and leave, punishments, welfare, privileges, and awards; directs and coordinates company administration; forms unit for drill, ceremonies, and other military formations; receives report of personnel present and absent, and reports number of unauthorized absences; holds NCO call to disseminate instructions and information to subordinate enlisted supervisors; coordinates operation of company food service and supply activities; assists company commander in accomplishing unit training; assists in inspection of organizational activities as prescribed by commander, observes discrepancies, and initiates appropriate corrective action; serves as Chief Instructor in a training facility, Chief Adviser to a reserve component unit, or Chief Adviser to a foreign military unit; must be able to perform the duties of at least one MOS at skill level 5; advises commander and staff on matters pertinent to troop welfare and morale in terms of assignment, reassignment, utilization, promotion, privileges, discipline, training, operations, and logistics; accompanies commander on inspections, visits, and at ceremonies; assists in inspection of command activities, facilities, and personnel as prescribed by commander; holds First Sergeants' or Sergeants' Major call to disseminate information and instruction; insures that newly assigned enlisted personnel are instructed in military courtesy, customs of the service, and in command regulations or policies; provides counsel and guidance to noncommissioned officers and other enlisted personnel of the command; inspects duties performed by subordinate noncommissioned officers; makes notes of observed discrepancies and initiates appropriate corrective action in name of commander; assists in reception of visitors to the command; sits as member of command promotion board for senior noncommissioned officers, where authorized by pertinent regulations; performs those additional duties prescribed by the commander.

Prepares, tests, and joins insulated conductors in multiple-conductor cables; forms splices and seals splice opening on nonquadded, quadded, coaxial, and video cables in aerial, trenched or buried, underground, submarine, house or building, and central office installations; tests, troubleshoots and repairs pressurized and nonpressurized multiconductor telephone cable; splices capacitors and loading coils to cable conductors; locates and installs cable terminals; terminates and connects cables to distribution boxes and distribution frames; promotes safety precautions and safety measures; employs barricades or warning devices whenever splicing aerial and underground cables; climbs poles and operates pump equipment; installs and performs preventive maintenance on pressurized cable systems; operates mechanical ladders and hydraulic booms; performs various electrical tests to locate and diagnose causes of malfunction in cables; repairs cables and cable terminals; plans splice location, studies detailed splicing diagrams, predetermines splice sequence, need for proper materials, tools, and equipment for each splice; complies with standard and local splicing practices; interprets line route maps, overlays, circuit diagrams, detail splice diagrams, cable route prints, cable plant records, splicing diagrams and symbols commonly used in cable communication system diagrams; determines the type and location of cable faults with test equipment; employs cable splicer hand tools, test sets, cable splicer auxiliary equipment and common construction tools.
